Today was a great first day. The dentists and staff at the Spokane Falls Clinic are super nice and helpful. I really can't believe how much I have learned, just in my first day of RUOP. They wanted to throw me into the fire with local anesthetic and assisting right off the bat, but I thought it may be best if I just observed today. I was still pretty nervous and I wanted to see how things were done before I jumped in. However, there will be no excuses tomorrow.... I'm planning on reading my local anesthetic book cover to cover tonight. I did get help with an extraction of a primary tooth on a 6/7 year old boy, so that was pretty awesome.
The children made the biggest impression on me today. I never thought I would be interested in Pediatric Dentistry, but I think I might need to leave that door open a bit. My heart went out to the kids in the clinic today. They are such innocent little guys and gals and it broke my heart to see them so scared in the dental chair. I could see how earning their trust and making their dental visit an enjoyable time could be very rewarding.
