Today was my first day in Colville, at the Colville Community Dental Clinic. I had a great day - much better than I expected. I hoped that I would be busy and able to participate, but I expected that my RUOP would be nothing more than glorified observation time. I was pleasantly surprised and put to work. Within 20 minutes of walking in the office, one of the doctors asked me if I wanted to administer local anesthesia, because there was a patient that needed it right now. I said sure, and within two minutes was giving the first injection of about 15 for the day. In addition to giving injections, I assisted on a root canal, placed a sealant, did a head, neck, and occlusion exam, and assisted on several restorative procedures. It was way better than simply observing.
This is only my second time ever coming to Colville, and it is a beautiful place. It is surrounded by mountains and trees. I am excited to see more of the community and the surrounding area. I love the outdoors, so this is heavenly country for me. During lunch, I went for a drive to see the town, and walking through the middle of town was a doe (female deer) and her tiny fawn. The little deer couldn't have been more than about 10 lbs, and it was still wobbily as it walked. It was really cool to see nature so up close. Being in the city has removed me from the outdoors over the past year, so it is fun for me to be in a place like this for my RUOP experience. To add to the goodness, they are putting me up in a really nice apartment. All in all, I am really happy with my first day.
